A Walk Through Scripture
A Walk Through Scripture

During Advent, Christmastide, Lent, Eastertide, and on feast days such as Baptism of the Lord and Pentecost, the readings are chosen by subject and relate to the day or the season. During the time of the year we refer to as ordinary time, the lectionary uses a series of semi-continuous readings. What this means is that for several months after Pentecost, the readings from the Old Testament, Epistles, and Gospels are more or less sequential and tell a chronological story of our faith history.

This is a wonderful time to start this study. Since we are in the first year of the three year cycle, the Old Testament readings start at the beginning. This year following Pentecost, the Old Testament lessons begin with creation and proceed through the earliest stories of our faith Noah and the flood, Abraham and Sarah, Moses and the Hebrew slaves, and so on. The Gospel lessons are from Matthew and will move through the stories of Jesus’ ministry.

On most Sundays, the readings in worship will be taken from among the lections. My hope is that reading and discussing the passages together in advance of Sunday will give us a richer experience in worship. I also hope that as a result of our engagement of and reflection on the texts, we will be more deeply grounded in Scripture.

We’ll begin our study on Monday, May 12 at 7:30 PM. The study will last one hour and there will be childcare.

I hope you’ll join me.

Blessings!
