On the Selection of Leaders Friday, March 28, 2008 (137 reads)
Friends: There are reasons why we are Presbyterians. Not that we believe Presbyterians are superior to other flavors of the Christian faith. One of the reasons I am a Presbyterian is that I support the way decisions are made and particularly the way that leaders are chosen in our church.
As Presbyterians we don’t have a perfect leader selection system, but we follow the biblical mandates. We gather a group of people to work, pray and reflect. They are to represent the characteristics of the “body” and hopefully to discern the mind of God.

Seattle Presbytery Calls The Rev. Scott Lumsden As Executive Presbyter Wednesday, March 19, 2008 (221 reads)
The Presbytery of Seattle has voted to call The Rev. Scott Lumsden as Executive Presbyter, effective May 1, 2008. Rev. Lumsden succeeds The Rev. Jerry Poole, who has fulfilled the role of Interim Executive Presbyter since September 2006.
Rev. Lumsden brings to the position a deep commitment to the life and mission of the local church; expertise and experience in the dynamics of congregational transition and transformation; and a depth of knowledge of polity and process that interprets context rather than dictates conclusions. "Scott has the ability to really listen to a person or a group of people and articulate back what he is hearing. Scott then has an uncanny way of reframing the whole situation that takes us all to a new place - a grace-filled place with new God-given possibilities. I like that!” comments Joyce Emery, Transitional Executive, Synod of Alaska-Northwest.

To Keep Our Heads Clear Thursday, March 13, 2008 (205 reads)
by Rev. Earl Palmer, University Presbyterian Church
One of my favorite quotations is from the Pensées of Blaise Pascal: “Do great things as though they are small because of Jesus Christ. Do small things as though they are great because of Jesus Christ.” I actually carved this inscription on a piece of Puget Sound driftwood and it sits in my office at the church to help keep my head clear. This marker influences me in two ways: First, I am encouraged by what Pascal wrote as if it were for me; and secondly, the marker reminds me to be sure I read the book he wrote and other books, too, where I will find even more encouraging thoughts.

A Note from Interim Executive Presbyter Jerry Poole Friday, March 07, 2008 (200 reads)
Friends: In my travels around our presbytery I have appreciated the varieties of worship styles demonstrated by various congregations. I have discovered a few ideas from which other congregations may benefit One of them is “the interview.” Twenty years ago many congregations, especially those of the conservative flavor, offered testimonials as a part of their worship services. People would step forward to share news of what they believed God had been doing in their lives. Sometimes those became, intentionally or not, brief sermons, maybe not so brief. Many church leaders brought such practices to a stop partly because they could not control their length and partly because they grew weary of the content or of the limited number of persons who could be counted on to offer such “testimonials” on the spur of the moment.

Will You Keep Your Fork? Thursday, March 06, 2008 (188 reads)
by Rev. Rob Caudillo, Marcus Whitman PC
One of my favorite stories demonstrates the hope, truth and power of the Easter message and of Jesus' resurrection. A woman was diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. As she was getting her things in order, she contacted her pastor and asked him to come to her house to discuss some of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at her funeral service, what Scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. She requested to be buried with her favorite Bible.
