Now that we have form in the cross we have something by which God’s Spirit can blow into and make fly. The wind causes the kite to move, gain new heights, change directions, and gives the kite life. The Spirit, the church’s wind gives the church life as well. The Spirit moves and causes the people to move. The Spirit gives us new and joyful life as we have experienced at First Presbyterian Church.
This life is playful and joyful like a kite flying in the wind and displaying its colors. In worship, in our ministries, in our fun gatherings we are flying high with God’s Spirit and carrying out the ministry of Jesus Christ. The key to this new energy of fun and joy is the Spirit flying in and through our faith community.
But there is one more item needed for the church to fly like a kite and that is tension. The tension is provided by the flyer that holds on to the string that is connected to the kite. Without tension the kite could not fly no matter how well put together the kite is and no matter the sufficient wind available. For the church the flyer is God. Without God holding on to us we would be blown out of control. We would not have direction for our flight. We would not be able to perform any of our tasks with out the direction and guidance of our God.
In this season of Easter and the coming Pentecost, May 11, let us remember what gives us our form and purpose, Jesus Christ; what gives us our life and energy, the Holy Spirit; and what give us our direction and guidance, God. With all these gifts we can fly beautifully in God’s skies displaying the wonderful playfulness of Christ’s church.
